A Prayer of Repentance & Blessings for Our Remaining Years & Future Generations
Holy, merciful, Most High, and Almighty God, our Heavenly Father,
Today, as we look back upon the years of our lives, we come humbly before You. When we were young, we often looked only ahead and hurried through life.
There were times when we followed our own desires and ambitions without taking enough time to consider what was right.
There were people whom we should have loved but failed to love as we should.
There were people whom we should have forgiven, but instead we held on to resentment, anger, and bitterness.
There were times when we pursued the desires of this world whether it be wealth, honor, recognition, and success, rather than walking in the way that pleased You.
There were also times when we insisted that our own opinions were right and, because of that, caused pain to our families and neighbors.
Looking back, we realize that we have committed many sins through our words, our thoughts, and our actions. There were things we knew were wrong, yet we did them anyway. There were also things we did not understand were wrong because of our ignorance and lack of wisdom.
Lord,
As we look back upon the years that have passed, we now bring all of these failures before Jesus Christ without hiding anything. Lord, have mercy on us. Forgive our sins.
We do not come before You trusting in our own righteousness.
We come in repentance, trusting only in the precious blood of Jesus Christ shed for us on the cross.
Through the blood that Jesus shed on the cross for our sins, please wash us clean from all our iniquities. And when we have sincerely repented, do not allow us to spend the rest of our lives
being crushed by guilt. Whenever we remember our past mistakes, do not let us fall into despair. Instead, help us live in the peace of this truth:
“In Jesus Christ, I am a forgiven child of God.”
Loving Heavenly Father,
We especially ask for Your great grace so that the mistakes of our past will not leave harmful wounds or influences upon our children and future generations. If our children have been wounded because of our failures as parents, please heal those wounds Yourself. If there were ways in which we failed as parents, give our children understanding and wisdom so that they will not repeat those same mistakes.
Do not allow our sins and shortcomings to become burdens that weigh down the lives of our children.
By Your grace, break the patterns of unhealthy habits, words, and behaviors so that they will not continue into the next generation.
Lord,
Help us recognize the unhealthy patterns and repeated sins that have existed in our families. Turn hatred into love, resentment into gratitude, pride into humility, greed into generosity,
and unbelief into faith. Let the wrong things end with our generation. And help us leave our descendants a more beautiful inheritance of faith. Whether we have many years remaining or only a few, do not allow us to spend those years only in regret. From this day forward, give us the courage to tell our children and grandchildren,
“I love you.”
“Thank you.”
“I am sorry.”
Lord,
Please bless our children.
Protect their health, protect their families, and guide the future of our children and grandchildren. Wherever our children may be, keep them under Your protection.
When they face difficulties, give them wisdom. When they begin walking down the wrong path, help them turn back. Bring good people into their lives and help them walk in honesty, integrity, and righteousness. Bless our grandchildren and all our descendants with the blessings of faith. If there are descendants among us who do not yet know You, open the doors of their hearts. And in Your perfect time, let them encounter Jesus Christ and experience the joy of salvation.
Do not allow our descendants to spend their lives chasing only worldly success.
Give them hearts that fear and honor God.
Teach them to value love more than material possessions, and integrity more than honor or recognition.
Help them become warm-hearted people who do not live only for themselves but know how to reach out to those who are in need.
Heavenly Father,
Do not allow us to waste the remaining years of our lives. Help us not to remain trapped in regret over the past, but to dedicate the days that remain to You. Help us live each day with gratitude. Whenever we meet someone, help us love them. Even in the smallest things, help us live with a heart that seeks to please You. Do not allow us to leave our children only material possessions.
Instead, help us leave them an inheritance of faith, love, forgiveness, and prayer. Through the way we live, let our children see something of You.
And when they look upon the final years of our lives,
may they be inspired to say,
“I, too, want to believe in God and live by faith.”
Lord,
Our bodies are no longer as strong as they once were. We cannot move as freely as we did in our younger years.
Different parts of our bodies have grown weaker, and sometimes loneliness and fear come upon us.
We do not know how many years remain before us.
But there is one thing we believe:
Our remaining days are in Your hands.
From the moment we were born until this very day, You have guided our lives. And we believe that the God who has led us this far will hold us securely until our final moment.
Do not let us fear death, but help us look to Jesus Christ. Not trusting in our own accomplishments or good deeds, but trusting in Jesus Christ, who died for us on the cross and rose again, help us hold firmly to the grace of salvation.
Lord,
When our final moment comes, do not allow our hearts to be shaken.
Let us make this confession of faith:
“Jesus, I believe in You.”
We place our souls into Your hands and ask You to let us live peacefully with the hope of heaven.
Help us believe that death is not the end of everything, but the doorway into eternal life with You.
And on the day we leave this world, do not let us be overcome by fear or regret. Instead, may we enter Your kingdom peacefully, held safely in the loving arms of Jesus Christ.
Loving God,
When we think of family members and friends who have gone before us, comfort us with the hope of heaven when we are overwhelmed by longing and grief. And if we still have time remaining in this world, help us use that time wisely and meaningfully. Help us leave words of blessing for our children. Help us share stories of faith with our grandchildren. Help us express our love to our families and let go of the hatred, resentment, and bitterness that may still remain in our hearts.
If we have been separated from our children for a long time because of hurt or misunderstanding, please open a path toward reconciliation.
Give us the courage to reach out first. Give us the humility to extend our hands first. And by Your grace, help us understand one another’s wounds and learn to love one another again.
Heavenly Father,
Do not allow our descendants to become discouraged because of our past. Instead, through our repentance and faith, help them discover a better path. May the next generation overcome the weaknesses of our generation through faith. Bring peace, health, and love to every family among our descendants. Wherever they may live, keep them under Your protection. Whenever they face difficult circumstances, make them people who pray. At every important moment in their lives, teach them to seek Your will. And raise up among our descendants many beautiful servants who will honor and serve You. Through their lives, let Your goodness and love flow into their families, communities, and the world.
Lord,
We now place our past into Your hands. The things we regret, the moments that brought us tears, the things of which we are ashamed, and every mistake we have made; we lay them down beneath the cross. Forgive our sins and cleanse our hearts. For the remainder of our lives, help us love You more deeply and live according to Your Word. Until our final day, do not let us lose our faith. And even at the moment when we face death, help us look to the cross of Jesus Christ and hold firmly to the hope of heaven. And please place upon our lips the most precious words we can leave with our children and grandchildren:
“I love you.”
“I am sorry.”
“Thank you.”
And above all:
“Believe in Jesus, love God, and live your life in faith.”
Let these be the words of faith that we leave as our spiritual legacy. Almighty and merciful Heavenly Father, Bless the remaining years of our lives. Bless our children, our grandchildren, and all our descendants. For the past of our family, grant repentance and forgiveness. For our present, grant peace and love. And for our future, grant faith, hope, and the grace of salvation.
Let our family become not a family that leaves behind worldly fame or wealth, but a family of faith that fears God and believes in Jesus Christ.
And when we finally stand before You, although we will be able to bring nothing from this world in our hands, may we stand before You with joy, holding firmly to our faith in Jesus Christ and the memories of having lived within the love of God.
Forgive all our sins. Save our souls.
And we place our children, grandchildren, and all our descendants into Your loving hands. We entrust to You the remainder of our lives, our final moments, and every day of our descendants’ futures.
We pray all these things in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and our Savior.
Amen.
