A Prayer from Parents for Their Child Who Is Struggling to Find Employment

Heavenly Father, full of love and grace,

Today, as parents, we quietly place our beloved child before You.

Lord,

From the time our child was little until now, we have watched every step of their journey. When our child was happy, we rejoiced together. When our child was hurting, we wished we could take the pain away.
Now our child has grown into an adult and has reached the time when they must begin living their own life. But as parents, our hearts are deeply troubled and saddened when we see our child struggling because the door to employment does not seem to open easily.

Lord,

You know how much our child may be hurting inside when, no matter how hard they try, things do not seem to work out as they hoped. Perhaps they tell us,
“I’m okay,” while secretly shedding tears when they are alone. Perhaps they hear about their friends getting jobs and feel as though they are the only ones being left behind.
Perhaps they quietly blame themselves, thinking,

“Why can’t I succeed?”
“I’m so sorry to my parents.”

Father God,

Please look into the deepest places of our child’s heart places that even we, as parents, cannot fully see. And gently place Your loving hand upon our child. Please whisper:

“My child… it is okay.”
“You do not need to feel sorry toward your parents.”
“Being late in finding a job does not lessen your worth.”
“I know how hard you have been trying.”

Lord,

Please let these words sink deeply into our child’s heart. As parents, there have also been times when our concern for our child may have unintentionally caused them pain. We may have said,

“When are you going to get a job?”
“Everyone else seems to have found a job…”
“Don’t you think you need to try a little harder?”

We may have said these things because we love our child, but perhaps those words became a heavy burden on their heart.

Lord, please forgive us. Help us become parents who wait rather than constantly pressure our child. Help us encourage rather than compare. Help us trust rather than worry. Help us become parents who can embrace our child warmly instead of trying to push them forward with our words. When our child comes home, let our home be a place where they can truly rest. Let our family be a warm and safe place
where our child can talk about anything without fear of criticism or judgment.

Heavenly Father…

Please bless our child’s future. We ask You to open the door to employment, but not simply any job. Please lead our child to work that matches their gifts, abilities, and interests; a place where they can work with meaning, find fulfillment, and grow for many years.

Bring good people into their life. Bring good supervisors and coworkers. Lead our child to a workplace where their abilities are recognized and where they can freely use their talents and pursue their dreams. When our child prepares for interviews, give them wisdom. Help them speak confidently about their strengths. When a good opportunity comes, give them the courage not to let fear cause them to miss it.

But Lord…

Help us humbly accept that the time we as parents desire may not be the same as the time in which You are working. Keep us from becoming impatient. Do not allow us to try to make decisions
for our child’s entire life. Sometimes, our hearts as parents are even more anxious than our child’s. We wonder,

“How will my child live in the future?”
“Will my child be able to build a good life?”
“Have we not been able to do enough for our child?”

Sometimes these worries keep us awake at night.

Lord…

Today we place all those worries into Your hands. We cannot protect our child forever, but help us trust that You already know the path our child will walk even better than we do. Help us gradually release the hand we have been holding so tightly and place our child more fully into Your hands. When our child falls, let Your love reach them before our worries do. When our child loses their way, bring good people into their life. And even when our child makes a wrong decision, give them the strength to stand again.

Loving God…

Please do not allow our child to think that failing to find a job means they are a failure. Help them understand that one rejection is not a rejection of their entire life. Do not let one failure cause them to abandon their dreams. When they fall, help them rise again. When they need to rest, let them rest. Then give them the courage to begin walking again. Even if their journey takes longer than others, give them a strong and steady heart to continue walking their own path. And Lord, please give us parents faith as well.

Plant this truth deeply in our hearts:

“My child’s life is not mine to control.
God is the One who will guide my child’s life.”

Help us carry this faith in our hearts. Instead of constantly worrying about our child’s future, teach us to pray. Whenever anxiety rises within us, help us place our child back into Your hands.

Lord…

If our child is currently living in a deep despair that they cannot share with anyone, please look upon their heart with special compassion. Do not let life become so overwhelming that they lose sight of its preciousness. When their heart begins to collapse, send someone they can turn to for help. Do not let our child feel that they must carry everything alone. Guide them to ask for help from parents, friends,
or qualified professionals when needed.

Father God…

Please give our child a healthy and peaceful heart. Help them sleep well. Help them eat well. And when they open their eyes in the morning, give them even one small reason to hope for the day ahead.

Above all, please do not let our child hate themselves.

Plant these beliefs deep within their heart:

“I am not a burden to my parents.”

“I am not a failure.”

“I am loved.”

“There is still a new path ahead of me.”

And please help us, as parents, never to forget these truths either. No matter how old our child becomes,
help us remember that our child is still a precious person whom You love deeply.

Even though we cannot solve every problem for our child, help us always be the kind of parents to whom our child can return and find warmth, comfort, and rest.

Lord…

One day, may our child look back on this difficult season and say:

“It was really difficult then,
but I was not alone.
God was with me,
and my parents continued to believe in me.”

Please bring that day.

Loving God,

We bless our child’s future. Wherever our child works, help them live honestly and faithfully. Teach them to value people more than money and the meaning of life more than worldly success.

Bless them with a good job. Bless them with good people. And above all, give them peace of heart, good health, wisdom, and a life filled with Your grace.
Help our child love their own life. Help them be grateful for each day and live it with purpose.

And one day, may our child become a deep and beautiful person who is able to offer warm comfort to someone else who is hurting.

Lord…

Please do what we parents cannot do.

Go before our child and prepare the paths that we cannot see. Protect our child with Your hands even in places we cannot reach. Please receive the desperate prayer of these parents who call their child’s name with worried hearts each day. And Lord, please speak to our child:

“My child, do not worry.
I am with you.
It is okay if you are a little late.
It is okay to begin again.
I will guide your life with love.”

Father God…

We believe in that promise. We place our child completely into Your hands. Give them greater peace tomorrow than they have today. Let them choose hope instead of despair. After tears, give them laughter. After waiting, give them good fruit. After a long night of darkness, bring them a bright morning. Walk with our child every step of the way. Open the door to meaningful employment. And throughout all the days ahead, bless our child abundantly with wisdom, health, peace, and Your loving presence. And please give us, as parents, faith and patience, so that we will not become impatient, but will continue to love our child and faithfully pray for them until the very end.

We love our child. But we believe that there is One who loves our child even more deeply than we do—

and that One is You, our Heavenly Father.

With that faith, we place our child’s hand into Your hands once again today. Please protect our beloved child to the very end and lead them along a beautiful and meaningful path. We trust You to guide their life according to Your loving purpose.

In the precious name of Jesus Christ,
our Savior, we pray.

Amen
