A Prayer for Parents Who Are Heartbroken Over a Child Who Is Struggling or Going Astray
Almighty and Most High God, our Heavenly Father,
You rule over all things in heaven and on earth, and You see even the deepest places of our hearts.
Today, with the earnest hearts of parents, we bring our beloved children before You.
Lord,
You gave us our children and allowed us to raise them with joy. But there are parents whose hearts are breaking as they watch their children struggle,
lose their way, or make choices that lead them down the wrong path.
Some children refuse to listen, struggle to adjust to school or work, or become involved with unhealthy friendships.
Some lie, break promises made to their families, or become trapped in things such as alcohol or gambling.
At times, they may even make choices that harm both themselves and their family’s future.
Parents want desperately to help, but they do not know what to do, and they lie awake at night, unable to sleep.
They shed tears as they think about their children and ask themselves,
“What did I do wrong?”
“Where did everything begin to go wrong?”
And their hearts ache as they blame themselves.
Loving Heavenly Father,
Please have mercy on these hurting parents.
You know the frustration they feel when they speak words of love and wisdom to their children, yet their children refuse to listen. You know the helplessness they experience
when they see their children walking down the wrong path and feel as though they cannot stop them.
You remember every tear shed by parents who pray night after night because they are so worried about their children’s future.
Lord,
First, please comfort the hearts of these weary parents.
Do not allow them to believe that they themselves are failures because of their children’s struggles.
Help them understand that they cannot take responsibility for every choice and action their children make.
Do not allow them to condemn themselves for everything that has gone wrong.
Give these parents wisdom and peace.
When they are angry, help them remain calm. When they feel hopeless, help them pray again.
And even in moments when they feel like giving up on their children, help them never let go of the bond of love.
But God,
Because they love their children, do not allow them to excuse wrongdoing or accept every behavior without boundaries.
Give them the wisdom and courage to set firm and healthy boundaries when necessary.
Teach them how to combine love with discipline, and before trying to change their children, help them first seek Your wisdom and allow You to change their own hearts.
Almighty Heavenly Father,
We now place our children into Your hands.
Go into the deepest places of their hearts where even a parent’s words cannot reach. Be with them even in the moments when their parents cannot see them.
When they walk down the wrong path, awaken their conscience.
When they make wrong choices, help them recognize the consequences.
Open the doors of their hearts so that they may honestly examine their lives.
Change their thoughts, Lord. Soften their hearts.
Help them let go of unhealthy desires, anger, pride, and rebellion, and teach them truth, love, responsibility, and integrity.
Help them distance themselves from unhealthy relationships and harmful friendships.
Bring good friends, good teachers, and wise and caring adults into their lives.
Provide a healthy environment where they can begin walking on the right path again.
God,
We confess that there are changes we cannot make by our own strength.
There are situations that parents cannot resolve no matter how much they try to persuade their children.
There are hearts that do not move even after being spoken to with love and patience.
But we believe that nothing is impossible for You.
May the mighty hand of Almighty God touch the hearts of our children. Even when we cannot see any change, help us believe that You are still working.
Melt hearts that have been hardened for a long time. Open hearts that have been closed. And grant our children the moment when they can honestly say,
“I was going the wrong way.”
May that realization not end in simple regret, but lead to genuine transformation in their lives.
Lord,
Plant new dreams in the hearts of children who are wandering. Do not allow them to believe that their lives have no meaning.
Help them realize that they still have time to begin again. Teach them that their past mistakes do not have to determine their future, and that the choices they make today can create a new future.
When they fail, do not let them give up.
When they fall, do not let them be afraid to rise again.
Give our children the strength to take responsibility for their lives. Help them begin with small things, live faithfully and responsibly, and gradually regain their confidence.
If they have hurt their families, give them the courage to ask for forgiveness. And give them the heart to forgive those who have hurt them.
Open the door of communication between parents and children. Help them understand one another’s hearts, and bring the day when they can once again sit together and speak with smiles and love.
Loving God,
Especially for children who are trapped in harmful addictions or destructive habits, please hold them with Your mighty hand.
Help them break free, step by step, from things that are difficult to overcome alone, through professional help and the support of good and caring people.
Do not let them reject necessary treatment or counseling. Give them the courage to choose a new life.
Bring trustworthy professionals, counselors, and people who can truly help them. Help them restore healthy patterns of living and learn to value their own lives again.
Heavenly Father,
Please also protect the hearts of these parents. When they see even the smallest change, help them hold on to hope.
But when change comes slowly, do not let them become discouraged too quickly.
Even if their child improves today and falls again tomorrow, do not let them believe that everything is over.
Give them patience through the long process of recovery.
Give them faith to wait for Your timing.
Remember the countless tears and prayers that parents have poured out for their children, and in Your time, may those prayers bear beautiful fruit.
Lord,
This is our earnest hope:
One day, may our children sit before their parents and say,
“Mom, Dad… I was wrong.”
And may You give them a new heart to say,
“I want to try to live my life the right way again.”
Until that day comes, give parents the strength to wait, and give children the courage to come home.
Most High God,
You are the One who can move the human heart.
You are the One who can bring new life even into places that appear to be dead.
Therefore, we ask You to perform a miracle of transformation in the lives of our children.
Bring hope into despair and light into darkness. Turn their wandering footsteps around and guide them back to the right path.
Do not simply block their way, Lord, but help them turn away from destructive paths and find the way that leads to life. And give parents new eyes with which to see their children.
Help them look beyond the problems and recognize the potential that still lives within them.
Help them remember not only their mistakes, but also the precious qualities You have placed within each child.
Do not allow parents to compare their children with others.
Do not let them see only their past. When they notice even the smallest sign of change, help them give thanks.
Loving God,
May our children one day look back on their past and say,
“I was on the wrong path then, but God never gave up on me.”
Transform them into mature people who can share with others the love and grace they themselves have received.
Lord,
Bring parents and children back into one another’s arms.
Draw close the hearts that have been separated by wounds.
Reconnect conversations that have been broken.
Give them the courage to say,
“I am sorry,”
and,
“Thank you.”
Let laughter return to their homes.
Let peace take the place of anxiety and conflict.
Today, parents may be crying because of their children, but one day, may they shed tears of gratitude because of their children.
Today, they may be worried about their children’s future, but one day, may they look upon their children’s transformation and growth and say,
“God, thank You.”
Almighty Heavenly Father,
We place into Your hands the problems that we cannot solve ourselves. Help us understand that our responsibility is to love, to pray, to wait, and to seek the help our children need.
And after that, give us the faith to entrust the transformation completely into Your hands.
Give parents wisdom.
Give children the grace to change.
Pour Your healing and restoration over the entire family and please do not allow us, as parents, to lose hope.
Help us hold firmly to these truths:
“Our child can change.”
“God has not given up on our child.”
“Our child’s present condition is not the final chapter of their life.”
Most High and Almighty God,
We believe that what is impossible for people is possible with You.
Change the hearts of our children.
Soften hearts that have become hardened.
Turn their wandering footsteps around and lead them into a new path.
Give our children new opportunities, new dreams, and the courage to begin a new life.
And when that change begins,
help parents recognize it
and encourage their children with joy.
Lord,
Please do not overlook the earnest hearts
of parents who call their children’s names
with tears as they pray.
Hear our prayers,
and in Your perfect time,
let them bear beautiful fruit.
Lord, please do not give up on our children.
Help us never to give up on our children.
And help our children never to give up on themselves.
Help them rise again. Help them dream again. Help them love again. And help them find their way back into the loving arms of their families.
We entrust every one of our requests to You.
Restore our families, and guide the future of our children according to Your good and perfect will.
We pray all these things in the precious name of Jesus Christ,
our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”
2 Corinthians 4:8–9
