Food is not just a tool to satisfy the body's hunger, it is fuel for our overall wellbeing. The table we encounter every day sometimes fills the soul and becomes a powerful medium that reminds us of God's faithful hand in the past.
In Deuteronomy 8, God introduces the promised land to the Israelites and mentions seven special ingredients. These foods were not just old crops from the ancient Middle East. It was a sign of God's divine supply and grace to make the people who passed through the wilderness enjoy it physically and spiritually.
I would like to talk about the meaning of The Seven Species in the Bible, which is being re-examined in modern nutrition today, and the grace of God experienced through food.
The seven foods recorded in the Bible—wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranate, olives, and dates (oyster/honey)— were the center of nutrition that sustained the lives of the people of Israel and a prophetic symbol of God's covenant.
1 . Wheat – the source of life and stock
Wheat was the center of ancient food. It is the material for making daily bread, and it means the food that God gives us every day. Nutritionally, whole wheat provides a rich group of fiber and vitamin B to provide continuous energy. This symbolizes Christ who has become the bread of eternal life for us.
2. Barley – the first fruit of humility and resurrection
Barley is a crop that is harvested earlier than wheat, and was the food of the poor and the center of the first fruit festival. Barley, which does not give in to the environment and grows well on a barren land, contains the message of resurrection and humility that revives life in the midst of hardships.
3. Grapes – the joy and the blessing of the community
Grapes were juiced and drunk as wine or dried and stored as raisins. In the Bible, the vine and its fruit always symbolize 'joy' and 'blessing'. A well-grined vineyard means God's protection and abundance, and Jesus himself called himself a 'vine' and explained the deep connection with us.
4. Figs – sweet, rest, and recovery
Figs were rich in sugar, which was a great source of nutrition that provided the ancients with immediate energy. In the Bible, the expression "sit under one's fig tree" means true peace and rest that came after the war. The sweetness of a wis the taste of peace given by God.
5. Pomegranates – abundance and God's faithfulness
Pomegranate, which contains numerous seeds, symbolizes abundance, fertility, and the commandments of God. It was a sacred and precious fruit that had a pomegranate-shaped embroider on the bottom of the priest's clothes. Pomegranate, which is full of powerful antioxidants, is still loved today as a great superfood that protects body cells.
6. Olives – light and anointing
Olive trees boast a strong vitality that survives for hundreds of years. The oil squeezed from the olives was used to light the lamp of the temple and to anoint the king and priest. Olive oil represents the presence and healing of the Holy Spirit, and the unchanging faithfulness of God.
7. Dates/Honey – the sweetness of the Promised Land
In the Bible, when it is said that "the land flows with milk and honey", 'honey' often means not only honey but also jujube fruit syrup.
The jujube is a natural energy source of vitamins and minerals, showing the existence of the sacred sweetness prepared by God even in the most desperate moments.
Food on the table is more than just consuming nutrients. The taste and aroma of food vividly evoke the memory of a certain moment and remind us of how God has accompanied us in the journey of life we have passed.
The reason why God emphasized these seven foods in Deuteronomy 8 is clear. God wanted to present physical health and spiritual abundance at the same time to the people who had passed the time of lack of wilderness.
The same goes for the table we encounter today. The healthy ingredients we come into contact with every day are the physical hands of God that keep our bodies intact. And the time to share and give thanks is a spiritual training that awakens our souls from insincerity.
The seven superfoods in the Bible are not just the legacy of ancient practices and nutrition. It is a proof of love that shows how carefully God takes care of his people.
Feel God's faithful supply even from a small dish on your table today.
A life that restores the health of the body through food and enjoys the richness of the soul through the stories contained in it.
This is the true life that God wanted to give us through the promised land.
